Chittauragh
- Kumbhalgarh
Chittarugarh
: Chittaurgarh fort in Rajasthan has a glorious
history of its own. Chittaurgarh reminds the tales of heroism
and the battles that it has witnessed. Even today countless
tales of Chittaur’s legendary heroes are sung by folk musicians
all over Rajasthan.
The fort is situated on a 180 metres high hill and is spread
over 700 acres. The Vijay Stambh, or Tower of Victory was
built in 1440 to mark the victory of Rana Kumbha in a battle.
Kirti Stambh is dedicated to Shri Adinath, the first jain
tirthankara. There are several other temples here, notably
the princess-poet Mira’s temple and the Kalika Mata temple.
The palaces of Rana Kumbha and Padmini are also worth a visit.
Kumbhalgarh : Built by
Rana Kumbha in mid-15th century, Kumbhalgarh is the second
most important fortress of Mewar, after Chittaurgarh. The
fort lies 1,100 metres above sea level and enclosed within
its borders are palaces, temples, fields, water sources and
farms - fully self contained to withstand a long siege. Kumbhalgarh
provides an excellent view of the countryside where many fierce
battles were fought. It also has its significance of being
the birth place of Maharan Pratap.
