Tiruchirappalli is usually known as Trichy or Tiruchy. Its most famous landmark is the Rock Fort Temple, a spectacular monument perched on a massive outcrop of rock which rises abruptly from the plane to tower over the old city. Rock Fort Temple : It is reached by a steep flight of steps cut into the rock, and the views from the summit are magnificent. The monument is open daily from 6 am until 8 pm. Entry is Rs. 0.50. Srirangam (Sri Ranganathaswami Temple) : It is the largest and one of the most interesting temple complexes in India. It is surrounded by seven concentric walls with 21 gopurams. The temple is very well-preserved, with excellent carvings throughout and numerous shrines to various gods. The main temple is dedicated to Vishnu. Opposite the shoe deposit is the 'Art Gallery', where you buy the Rs.2 ticket to climb the wall for a panoramic view of the entire complex. The inner temple is open daily from 6.15 am to 1 pm. and from 3.15 to 8.45 pm. An annual car festival is held here between 15 December and 25 December each year, drawing pilgrims from all over India. Sri Jambukeshwara Temple : On the opposite side of the main Madras to Salem Rd to Sri Ranganathaswami Temple,the Sri Jambukeshwara Temple is dedicated to Siva and has 5 concentric walls and 7 gopurams. Its deity is a Siva lingam. It is open daily between 6 am and 1 pm and between 4 and 9.30 pm. St John's Church : It has louvered side doors which can be opened to turn the church into an airy pavilion. It is interesting for its setting and architecture and also for the surrounding cemetery.



GETTING THERE AND AWAY AIR The Indian Airlines office is in the Railway Co-operative Mansion Dindigul Rd. There are daily Indian Airlines flights to Madras, Madurai and Bangalore. Indian Airlines has one flight a week to Colombo on Mondays. Air Lanka also services this sector. BUS Trichy has a State bus stand, and a Thiruvalluvar bus stand only two minutes walk away. The Thiruvalluvar buses originating in Trichy can be computer booked in advance. These buses include : Bangalore, Coimbatore, Madras, Nagarcoil via Madurai and Tirupathy via Vellore. There are also superdelude buses in Madras from the Thiruvalluvar station. In addition to the above buses, there are private buses to Madras. TRAIN Trichy ison the main Madras to Madurai railway line and some trains run directly from Madras. Other trains go via Chidambaram and Thanjavur. The Madras to Madurai and Madras to Rameswaram trains also go through Trichy. The fastest train is the Vaigai Express.
