Mathura is an ancient cultural and religious centre. The Buddhists monasteries here received patronage from Ashoka. Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi-There is a small room which looks like a prison cell.Here pilgrims file past the stone slab onto which Krishna is supposed to have been born.There is the Aurangzeb's mosque and also a Hindu Temple. Along the Yamuna River - Vishram Ghat is the important bathing ghat.The Sati Burj is a 4-storey tower built by the son of Behari Mal.Also,there is the Jami Masjid and the Dwarkadheesh Temple. Archaeological Museum- There is a 5th century standing Buddha. Also,there are many other sculptures,coins,terracotta work and a pleasant garden. Gita Mandir - There is the Gita Stambh,a pillar on which the whole of the Bhagavad Gita is carved. MATHURA IS TRADITIONALLY RECOGNISED AS THE CAPITAL OF BRAJ BHOOMI, THE LAND WHICH GAVE BIRTH TO LORD KRISHNA. THE REGION IS RICHLY INTERWOVEN WITH THE LEGEND OF KRISHNA, KEPT ALIVE TODAY BY MILLIONS OF DEVOTEES WHO LOOK UPON HIM AS THE MOST ENDEARING INCARNATION OF LORD VISHNU, AND BY SPECIFIC LOCA- TIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE LEGEND. MATHURA'S HISTORY DATES BACK TO AT LEAST 600 BC AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL REMAINS HAVE TESTIFIED ITS IMPORTANCE. IT WAS OF SIGNIFICANCE DURING THE MAURYAN ERA AND RECEIVED GREAT STIMULUS UNDER EMPE- ROR ASHOKA. THE TWIN CITY OF VRINDAVAN, 15KMS AWAY, IS ALSO INTEGRAL TO THE LEGEND OF KRISHNA. THIS IS WHERE LORD KRISHNA PLAYED HIS FLUTE AND SPORTED WITH THE GOPIS. THE TOWN WAS LATER IMMORTALIZED IN THE POEMS OF MIRABAI, A PRINCESS OF MEDIEVAL INDIA WHO BECOME AN ARDENT DEVOTEE OF KRISHNA. GETTING THERE AND AWAY Mathura is 57 km north of Agra and 141 km south of Delhi. It is an important railway junction with direct trains to many cities. The fastest train from Delhi is the early morning Taj Express which takes 2.5 hours. It is also possible to rent bikes here.
