Vasco da Gama landed at Calicut in 1498, becoming the first European to reach India via the sea route around the southern Cape of Africa. 5 km from Calicut at East Hill is the Pazhassirajah Museum, an archaeological museum with copies of ancient mural paintings, bronzes and old coins as well as models of temples and megalithic monuments. It is open daily except Monday from 10 am to 5 pm. Next road to it is the Krishnamenon Museum, which houses paintings of Raja Ravi Verma and Raja Raja Verma as well as memorabilia of a former president of India. It is open daily except Monday and Wednesday morning from 10 am to 5 pm.
