JAUNPUR SIGHTSEEING

This town is of great interest to architectural historians for its mosques, built in a unique style that is part Hindu and Jain, and part Islamic. The most impressive mosques are notable for their odd mixture of architectural styles, their two-storey arcades and large gateways, and for their unusual minarets. There is the Atala Masjid one km. from the station near the GPO. Continue 500 metres south of here and you come to Jaunpur Fort and the stone Akbari Bridge. The largest of the mosques is the impressive Jami Masjid, 1km north of the bridge. Other places to see include the Jhanjhri Masjid, the tombs of the Shaqui Sultans, the Char Ungli Masjid and the Lal Darwaza Masjid.
