INDORE SIGHTSEEING

 

Indore is a major textile-producing centre. Rajwada : In the old part of town, the multistorey gateway of the Rajwada or Old Palace looks out onto the palm-lined main square in the streets of the Kajuri Bazaar. Kanch Mandir : On Jawahar road, not far from the Rajwada, is the Kanch Mandir or Seth Hukanchand Temple.This Jain temple is very plain externally, but inside is completely mirrored. Museum : The museum, near the GPO, has one of the best collections of medieval and premedieval Hindu sculptures in Madhya Pradesh. Some pieces are stunning in their delicacy. Lal Bagh Palace : In the south-west, surrounded by gardens, lies the grand Lal Bagh Palace. It has entrance gate, a wooden ballroom floor mounted on springs, marble columns, chandeliers and stuffed tigers. Other Attractions : The chhatris stand in the Chhatri Bagh on the banks of the River Khan. The cenotaph of Malhar Rao Holkar I, founder of the Holkar dynasty, is the most impressive. At the western end of MG road, the Bada Ganapati Temple contains an 8 mtr. high day-glo orange statue of Ganesh, which is reputed to be the world's largest. The Kajuri Bazaar streets are a good place to take a stroll. They are always very busy and there are many examples of old houses with picturesque overhanging verandahs.

GETTING THERE AND AWAY AIR Indore Aerodrome is 10 km from the city. Indian Airlines has daily flights to Bombay and Delhi, via Bhopal and Gwalior. The small private airline Continental flies to Bhopal, Jabalpur, Raipur and Bombay. BUS There are re frequent departure from Sarwate bus station to Ujjain. For Mandu, there are only a few direct buses. From Sarwate bus station there is a direct bus to Ajanta and an evening bus that also goes to Ellora. The most impressive bus in the state, and possibly lin the country, is the air-conditioned service between Bhopal and Indore. Alternatively there are frequent departure from Sarwate to Bhopal. From Gangwal bus stand there are many buses for Dhar and a few departures to Udaipur. There are several private bus companies. Vijayant Travels is a large one operating deluxe overnight buses to Bombay, Pune, Nagpur, Gwalior and Aurangabad. TRAIN Indore is connected to the main broad gauge lines between Delhi and Bombay by tracks from Nagda via Ujjain in the west and Bhopal in the east. The r other broad gauge line runs from Indore to Bilaspur via Ujjain, Bhopal and Jabalpur. There is also a metre gauge line through Indore.
