GULMARG SIGHTSEEING 1

 

The large meadow of Gulmarg is 52 km south-west of Srinagar at 2730 metres. The name means meadow of Flowers and in spring it is just that. This is also an excellent trekking base. Gulmarg Walks :- Outer Circular Walk : A circular road, 11 km in length, runs right round Gulmarg through pleasant pine forest with excellent views over the Kashmir Valleys. Khilanmarg : This smaller valley is about a 6 km walk from the Gulmarg bus stop and car park. The meadow, carpeted with flowers in the spring, is the site for Gulmarg's winter ski runs and offers a fine view of the surrounding peaks and the Kashmir Valley. Alpather : It is beyond Khilanmarg, 13 km from Gulmarg. Ningle Nallah : Flowing from the melting snow and ice on Apharwat Peak and Alpather Lake, this pretty mountain stream is 10 km from Gulmarg. Ferozpure Nallah : Reached from the Tangmarg road, or from the outer circular walk, this mountain stream meets the Bahan River at a popular picnic spot known as Waters Meet. Ziarat of Baba Reshi : This Muslim shrine is on the slope below Gulmarg and can be reached from either Gulmarg or Tangmarg. The Ziarat, or tomb, is of a well known Muslim saint.

THE AREA WAS ALSO WONDERFUL FOR SKI-TOURING ALTHOUGH VERY LITTLE CROSS-COUNTRY EQUIPMENT WAS AVAILABLE. GULMARG CAN GET PRETY COLD AT TIMES, EVEN COMPARED TO PAHALGAM, SO COME PREPARED WITH PLENTY OF WARM CLOTHES.IN 1992, THE HOTELS AND SKI-LIFTS HERE REMAINED CLOSED.THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS INCLUDED IN THE HOPE THAT THE SITUATION MAY IMPROVE.

OUTER CIRCULAR WALKS -------------------- A CIRCULAR ROAD 11 KM IN LENGTH, RUNS RIGHT AROUND GULMARG THROUGH PLEASANT PINE FORESTS WITH EXCELLENT VIEWS OVER THE KASHMIR VALLEY. NANGA PARBAT IS VISIBLE TO THE NORTH, AND HARAMUKH AND SUNSET PEAK ARE ARE VISIBLE TO THE SOUTH-EAST.

NINGLE NALLAH FLOWING FROM THE MELTING SNOW AND ICE ON APHARWAT PEAK AND ALPATHER LAKE THIS PREETY MOUNTAIN STREAM IS 10 KM FROM GULMARG. THE STREAM CONTINUES DOWN IN TO THE VBALLEY BELOW AND JOINS THE JHELUM RIVER NEAR SOPORE. THE WALKING PATH CROSSES THE NINGLE NALAH BY A BRIDGE AND CONTINUES TO THE LIENMARG ANOTHER GRASSY MEADOW AND A GOOD SPOT FOR THE CAMPING

FEROZOPORE NALLAH REACHED FROM TANGMARG ROAD OR FROM THE OUTER CIRCULAR WALK THIS MOUNTAIN STREAM MEETS THE BAHAN RIVER AT THE POPULAR PICNIC SPOT KNOWN AS THE WATERS MEET THE STREAM IS REPUTED TO BE PARTICULARLY GOOD FOR THE TROUT FISHING ITS ABOUT FIVE KM FROM GULMARG. YOU CAN CONTINUE ON FROM HERE TO TOSAMAIDAN, A THREE DAY 50KM WALK TO THE KASHMIRS AND THE MOST BEATIFUL MEADOWS.

PLACES TO EAT LIMITED AND NOT VERY GOOD SUMMED UP THE SITUATION. FOR CHEAP MEALS THERE WERE THE SOUTH INDIAN CAFES BY THE BUS STAND. ELSE WHERE PRICES WERE CONSIDERABLY AHDOOS NEXT TO THE BUS STAND WAS PROABLY THE BEST IN THE GULMARG.
