Gawahati (Gauhati/Guwahati) : It is the capital of Assam and is on the banks of the Brahmaputra River.It has many ancient Hindu temples but its main importance is as a gateway to the northeast and the wildlife reserves. Temples : The Umananda Temple is a Siva temple on Peacock Island in the middle of the river. There is a pleasant ferry across the river. The Navagrah Temple is the Temple of the Nine Planets.It is on Chitrachal Hill, near the city. Gawahati's best known temple is the Kamakshya Temple on Nilachal Hill. It attracts pilgrims from all over India. The temple is the centre for Shakti worship. In the centre of Gawahati, the Janardhan Temple has an image of Buddha. Other attractions : The Assam State Zoo has tigers, lions, panthers and Assam's famous rhinos and also African two-horned variety.There is an Assam State Museum as well as the Assam Government Cottage Industries Museum.
