Bodhgaya is the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment.It is the most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in the world.The best time to visit Bodhgaya is when the Tibetan pilgrims come during the winter. Mahabodhi Temple:A 50-metre high pyramidal spire tops the Mahabodhi Temple, inside which is a large gilded image of the Buddha.There is the carved and sculptured stone railing around the temple.There are Stone stupas erected by visiting pilgrims. Bodhi Tree: A red sandstone slab under the tree is said to be the Vajrasan, or diamond throne,on which the Buddha sat. Monasteries:They are built in a representative architectural style.The Thai temple looks very much like the colourful 'wats' you see in Thailand.The Tibetan temple and monastery contains a large prayer wheel.There is also the Sakya monastery and the Karma Temple.The Japanese temple has a very beautiful image of the Buddha brought from Japan. The Tai Bodhi Kham mon- astery is being built by Buddhist tribes from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Other attractions: The archaelogical museum has collection of Buddha figures and pillars.The Hindu Shankaracharya Math has a temple.Also,there are Dungeshwari and Suraya temples.There is the 25-metre Great Buddha Statue in the Japanese Kamakura style. Meditation Course: Courses and retreats take place in the winter,from November to early February.Some of the most accessible courses are run by the Root Institute for Wisdom Culture,set in a peaceful location of the edge of Bodhgaya.



GETTING THERE AND AWAY Bodhgaya is 13 km from Gaya. There is daily bus to Patna and Rajgir, many more from Gaya.
