Ajmer is a green oasis on the shore of the Ana Sagar.It is a major centre for Muslim pilgrims during the fast of Ramadan. It has some superb early Muslim architecture, a fort overlooking the town and a lively bazaar. Ana Sagar: This is an artificial lake. On its bank is a fine park,the Dault Bagh,containing a series of marble pavilions.It's popular for an evening stroll. There are good views from the hill beside the Dault Bagh. Dargah : At the foot of a barren hill in the old part of town, this is one of India's most important places for Muslim pilgrims.The Dargah is the tomb of a Sufi saint.As you enter the courtyard, a mosque constructed by Akbar is on the right.In an inner court, there is another mosque. Constructed of white marble, it has 11 arches and a Persian inscription running the full length of the building.The saint's tomb is in the centre of the second court. It has a marble dome and the actual tomb inside is surrounded by a silver platform.The tomb attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. Adhai-din-ka-jhonpra:The mosque is a particulary fine piece of architecture with different pillars and the 'arched' screen with minarets is noteworthy. Three km and a steep climb beyond the mosque,the Taragarh,or Star Fort commands an excellent view over the city. Akbar's Palace : This fort was built by Akbar and today houses the Ajmer Museum. Nasiyan Temple : The Red Temple on Prithviraj Marg is a Jain temple.Its double-storey hall contains a series of large,gilt wooden figures from Jain mythology which depict the Jain concept of the ancient world.It's certainly worth a visit.



GETTING THERE AND AWAY BUS : There are buses from Jaipur to Ajmer every 15 minutes. State transport buses also go to Jodhpur, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Kota, Ranakpur, Bharatpur and Bikaner. There are also regular buses to Kota and Bundi. Also available are private deluxe buses to Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Delhi and Bombay. TRAIN : Ajmer is on the Delhi/Jaipur/Marwar/Ahemdabad line and most trains on this line stop at Ajmer. The Pink City Express takes about the same time as the buses to cover the distance. To Udaipur the fastest express takes takes 7.5 hours.
