Aditya Birla Enters Korean Fibre Pact Textile group Aditya Birla group has formed a strategic alliance with the South Korean Non-Woven Industry Co-operative (KNIC) in a bid to boost its viscose staple fibre business. The agreement will see Birla to supply the fibre to the Korean co-operative for the next 10 years under the Birla Viscose brand. The group will also develop some fibres especially for the Korean market.



Burlington Plans to Source Fabrics From India The US-based Burlington Industries, which sells fabrics to leading brands like Levis, Pepe, Marks & Spencer and Vanity Fair, plans to make India a sourcing base for fabrics. Burlington Industries currently has manufacturing facilities in Mexico and the US. It is in the process of drawing up plans to expand its manufacturing base to Asia, including India. Burlington Industries already has a denim manufacturing base in India. It set up a joint venture company in ?96 with Mafatlal Industries to make denim fabrics. It makes 10m metres of denim fabric annually and is now doubling its capacity to 20m metres for an investment of Rs 60 crore. The denim plant is at Navsari in Gujarat. The joint venture company, Mafatlal Burlington Industries exports around 85% of its produce to 25 countries across the globe.



Sara Lee to enter Indian Apparel Market Consumer products and foods major Sara Lee Corporation of the US, which markets brands like DKNY, Fila, Bali and Wonderbra, is planning a major entry into the Indian apparel mart. The company is looking at various options for its proposed entry, and could adopt the wholly-owned subsidiary route though it is not averse to roping in local partners. It has, however, ruled out the possibility of out-licensing the brand. For a start, Sara Lee is looking at launching Hanes, its mega-casualwear brand, the Champion brand of sportswear and Playtex brand of innerwear in the country. The biggest brand in its portfolio is Hanes, which competes with Jockey worldwide. Sara Lee worldwide has three highly focussed business: food and beverages, intimates and apparel and household products, and its largest division is Sara Lee Branded Apparel. Sara Lee Corporation already has a presence in India through Godrej Sara Lee, its joint venture with the Godrej group, for household products.



Reliance to Discontinue Womens Wear Range Looking to restructure its textile business Reliance Industries has decided to terminate production of sarees and dress materials under the Vimal brand and focus only on products like suitings.The Vimal range is one of the largest clothing and furnishings brands in India, and figures with others with high equity brands like Raymond and Bombay Dyeing. The brand has now become only a small business in the Reliance gameplan following its focus on petrochem and oil. Having a good market share in the non-metros, Reliance last year unveiled a new men?s apparel and clothing range under the brand name V2. The company is now in the process of introducing an array of products under this brand.



Hilfiger to Enter India: Teams up With Arvind: Tommy Hilfiger, one of the largest-selling apparel brands in the US, is coming to India, reports The Economic Times. The $6-billion apparel giant Tommy Hilfiger Corporation has entered a strategic licensing agreement with the Ahmedabad-based Arvind group to market the Tommy Hilfiger brand in the country. After signing the pact two weeks ago, both players are awaiting mandatory approvals from the Reserve Bank of India and Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).Under the agreement, Arvind Brands, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lalbhai group flagship Arvind Mills, will sell Tommy Hilfiger products. Arvind Brands, which owns the Indian marketing rights for leading US brands like Arrow, Lee and Wrangler, is planning to market products through exclusive Tommy Hilfiger stores and departmental chains. While Tommy Hilfiger products are available in the range of $40-$500 globally, pricing for the Indian market is currently being worked out.



Sarika Sukhdeo -Miss India Worldwide 2002 In a glittering function organized on March 9 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California, Sarika Sukhdeo of South Africa was crowned Miss India Worldwide 2002. The three-hour show that put 14 girls of Indian origin from all over world to test on their beauty, brains, talent and presence of mind, with Sarika bagging the top title. Sarika, 22, is a certified Health and Beauty Therapist and hails from Durban, South Africa. Her hobbies include yoga, and modelling. The First Runner-Up was Tricia Bhim of Trinidad & Tobago and the Second Runner-Up was Ekta Bhatt representing Tanzania. The other two finalists were Parveen Sian of the United Kingdom and Stacy Issac of U.S.A. Along with the pageant various sub-contests were held during the weeklong activities in San Jose. The winners of the sub-contests were Hiral Shah (Kenya) "Beautiful Smile", Stacy Issac (USA) "Beautiful Eyes", Ekta Bhatt (Tanzania) "Miss Photogenic", Sarika Sukhdeo (South Africa) "Beautiful Hair", Stacy Isaac (USA) "Best Talent" and Parveen Sian (United Kingdom) "Miss Congeniality". The panel of judges included Yogesh Mathur (Regional Director, Air-India), Sabeer Bhatia of Hotmail fame, Anjana Trivedi a designer of home and women accessories, filmmaker Sujit Saraf, entrepreneurs Anu Sharma, Shailesh Mehta, Satya Shaw and Beauty Professor from South Africa Hanisa Ali. Anupama Verma an upcoming star and top model was Special Guest. USA & India TV personalities Lakshmi Baweja and Nisha Ahluwalia were hosts of the event



India Welcomes First Brirish Indian Daughter Parveen Sian, first Miss India UK, arrives in Mumbai on her first visit to India after winning the prestigious title of Miss India UK: Independent Woman. She will represent United Kingdom at the Miss India Worldwide Finals to be held in USA in March 2002. The first ever Miss India UK finals were held on October 26, 2001 at Coalville, Leicestershire. Dubbed 'The Most Glamorous Indian Event of the Year' [in the UK], it was a resounding success. Top British Indian BBC television presenters in the UK, Rajesh Mirchandani and Sonia Deol hosted the event. Celebrities included former Miss World Diana Hayden, cricketer Chris Lewis and CNN news anchorman Riz Khan. Catwalk model and dancer Parveen's ambition is to work in the Bollywood entertainment industry. She has danced with a number of Bollywood stars in shows in the UK from Gulshan Grover, Saif Ali Khan to Karisma Kapoor to Namrata Shirodker.
