Pandit
Jasraj
Pandit
Jasraj is one of India's most esteemed vocalists. His
3 1/2 octave range coupled with his rich sonorous voice
and subtle ornamentation of complex passages have won
the popularity of audiences through out the world. Of
particular note is his reintroduction of ancient Sanskrit
texts to the singing of khayal, further enriching the
content of his art. Khayal is a highly improvised style
that is the predominant form of North Indian vocal music.
He is the leading exponent of the Mewati gharana (school)
and performed for many years with his brother, Pandit
Moti Ram, on All India Radio and at the court of Maharaj
Jaiwant Singh. He has received many honors and awards
including the prestigious title Padma Shree by the President
of India and made numerous recordings and tours throughout
India, Europe and the United States.
